Lumonde is what happens when you roll a crepe thin enough and then do it many times over.
Bourbon layers sheet after sheet of baked crepe into a tight spiral, wraps the whole roll in cocoa cream, and the result shatters the moment you bite it — a fine, flaking collapse rather than a snap, with crumbs that go everywhere.
Japanese households have a running joke about this. You do not eat Lumonde over a clean shirt.
The flavour is deliberately restrained.
Bourbon keeps the cocoa cream lightly sweetened so the toasted crepe underneath stays audible, and the company describes the result as jōhin — refined, well-mannered, the word used for things that do not announce themselves.
Each stick is small, 7.4 g and 37 kcal, purple-wrapped, and gone in two bites.
It is the archetypal sweet to serve a visitor alongside green tea, and it has been on Japanese shelves since 1974.
That longevity has made Lumonde something of a national institution.
Bourbon has released Lumonde-flavoured ice cream and Lumonde cake, and the purple packaging is recognised instantly here in a way few biscuits manage.
Twelve sticks to a bag. Coffee, black tea or green tea all work; a plate underneath is advisable.
