Koikeya Dontacos Tortilla Chips Beef Chili Taco

Dontacos is Japan’s own tortilla chip.

Launched by Koikeya in 1994, the triangular corn chip has spent three decades as the domestic answer to the imported originals — long enough to lodge itself in the national memory, not least through an advertising jingle (“Dontacos ttara Dontacos”) that a generation of Japanese people can still sing unprompted.

In September 2025, Koikeya gave the brand its most significant renewal in years, and the changes are physical before they are anything else. Each chip is now cut larger and thicker — the package wears the word “Grande” to make the point — and the corn dough itself was reformulated for deeper toastiness.

The result is a chip with genuine heft: the dense, loud crunch Japanese marketing calls zaku’, engineered for what the press release cheerfully describes as eating in great, satisfying mouthfuls.

Beef Chili Taco is the renewed lineup’s flagship, and it plays the taco flavor with the volume up.

Concentrated beef umami leads — rich, meaty, and unapologetic — with a sharp edge of red chili cutting through behind it.

Koikeya files it under its “gatsu-gatsu” register: the stimulating, appetite-driving style of seasoning built for devouring rather than nibbling, the same instinct that made the company’s Karamucho a spicy-snack institution.

There is a pleasant irony in a Mexican-inspired chip this thoroughly Japanese: a Tokyo snack maker’s idea of a taco, seasoned to the intensity Japanese snack fans expect, on a chip sized for the way people actually eat them.

Alongside its Cheese Chili Taco sibling, it represents a thirty-year-old brand deciding to get bigger, louder, and crunchier all at once.

Pour a cold drink, or don’t bother with a bowl — the bag works fine.
