Calbee Crisp Potato Chips Umashio

Crisp is Calbee’s formed potato chip — made from dried potato flakes rather than sliced whole potatoes, which produces a more uniform shape, a distinct texture, and a different eating experience than the company’s standard potato chip lineup.

The format has been around in various iterations since 2016; the 2024 relaunch moved from a tube to a bag format, a change that also allowed Calbee to improve the seasoning distribution — fewer gaps in coverage, more consistent flavor across each piece.

The Umashio variety is the straightforward one: salt and umami, nothing else competing for attention.

The ingredient list is short — dried potato, vegetable oil, salt, dextrin, starch — and the seasoning reflects that restraint.

The salt hits cleanly without the sharpness that can make some formed chips feel oversalted, and the umami from the amino acid seasoning adds a rounded depth that makes the flavor linger past the initial crunch.

The texture is the defining characteristic of the Crisp line.

Formed chips have a different bite from sliced chips — firmer, with a pronounced snap rather than a delicate crunch, and a density that makes each piece feel more substantial. Calbee describes it as “zakutto” — a Japanese onomatopoeia for a firm, satisfying crunch with body to it. It holds up well eaten a few at a time, which is why some people stack them.

No allergens in the 28 major categories. A clean, simple snack that earns its place through texture and seasoning calibration rather than complexity.
