Black Thunder Bitter is the original with the sugar pulled back.
Cacao mass appears three separate times in the ingredient list — in the coating, in the chocolate, and on its own — which is what produces the sharper, more pronounced cocoa character Yuraku describes as hanayaka de kire no aru, bright and clean-edged.
The standard Black Thunder leads with sweetness; this one leads with cocoa.
The architecture is unchanged.
A compacted core of cocoa cookie and biscuit, bound and coated in chocolate, giving the zakuzaku break that the bar is named for — Yuraku’s word for something that fragments in layers rather than snapping.
What changes with the bitter formulation is that the cocoa in the biscuit and the cocoa in the coating now read as the same flavour rather than as filling and shell.
Yuraku Seika launched Black Thunder in 1994 from its base in Tokyo, and it became a fixture of Japanese convenience stores on the strength of costing almost nothing and tasting like more.
18 g a bar, 94 kcal, with a ten-month shelf life.
