Morinaga Chocoball Peanuts

Some snacks are famous for their taste.

Chocoball is famous for its beak. Since 1967, Morinaga’s little box of chocolate-covered peanuts has been a Japanese institution — not so much for what’s inside as for the character on the front and the treasure hunt printed on the back.

The snack itself is simplicity done well: a whole roasted peanut wrapped in milk chocolate and finished with a thin, glossy candy shell, so each bite goes crisp-shell, smooth-chocolate, then crunchy-nut.

The box is designed to pour straight into your mouth through a little flip-up beak — a format so iconic that generations of Japanese children have known exactly how to “feed” themselves from it.

But the real magic is the game.

The box’s mascot is Kyoro-chan, a wide-eyed toucan-like bird, and hidden across the packaging are the legendary Angel marks: spot a gold angel on the inside of one box, or collect five silver angels.

And you can mail them to Morinaga in exchange for the fabled Omocha no Kanzume — the “Can of Toys,” a collector’s tin that money cannot buy and that has been a childhood dream in Japan for over half a century.

Every box you open is a lottery ticket.

The peanut version is the original and the definitive one, the red box that started it all in the lineup.

A whole nut, a chocolate shell, a cheerful bird, and a tiny chance at a treasure — this is less a candy than a piece of Japanese childhood you can hold in one hand.
