Tirol Choco Coffee Chocolate Nougat

Coffee Nougat is the original Tirol Choco — the flavor that established the trapezoidal format that the brand has used ever since.

It launched in 1979, when the previous three-mound shape was retired in favor of the flat-topped trapezoid that is now instantly recognizable to anyone who has walked into a Japanese convenience store, dagashi shop, or supermarket.

The formula has not changed since launch, which is a rare claim for any Japanese snack product and one that Tirol Choco makes without qualification.

The structure is the thing that distinguishes Coffee Nougat from every other Tirol variety.

Rather than a single material throughout — as in the Milk variety — or a mixed dough — as in White & Cookies — Coffee Nougat is a chocolate shell encasing a nougat center.

Nougat, in the Tirol formulation, is made from sugar, starch syrup, and starch, whipped into a chewy, slightly aerated texture that pulls apart rather than dissolving cleanly.

It is the piece that requires actual chewing and rewards it with a slow release of flavor rather than an immediate one.

The coffee character comes from real coffee in the chocolate shell — a slightly bitter, roasted note that arrives first as the exterior gives way, followed by the sweeter, chewier quality of the nougat underneath.
