Yuraku Black Thunder Chocolate Mini Bar Family Pack

The recipe is unchanged — cocoa cookie and plain biscuit compacted together, coated in chocolate, with the cocoa cookie’s bitterness holding the sweetness in check.

The texture is the product’s whole identity.

Yuraku calls it attōteki zakuzaku kan — overwhelming crunch — and zakuzaku describes something that fractures in layers rather than snapping cleanly.

The two biscuits do different jobs: the cocoa cookie supplies the bitter edge, the plain biscuit the structure.

Each mini bar is 11 g and 58 kcal, individually wrapped, with the family pack holding 139 g in total including wrappers.

Yuraku Seika launched Black Thunder in 1994 from its base in Tokyo, and it has been a fixture of Japanese convenience stores ever since on the strength of tasting like more than it costs.
