Calbee’s Potato Chips Cho Usugiri Consomme takes the ultra-thin cut format of the Cho Usugiri lineup and applies it to one of the most layered seasonings in the Japanese chip canon: consommé.
The cut is the same as the rest of the series — thinner than the standard Calbee chip, fried in sunflower oil, with a texture that is light enough to feel almost weightless.
That lightness is what makes this pairing work. Consommé seasoning is inherently complex, built from chicken, beef, onion, tomato, soy sauce, and spice, and a heavier chip can make that complexity feel dense.
Here, with less potato in the way, the seasoning has room to open up.
The onion is the most prominent note, contributing a gentle sweetness that softens as it lingers. Behind it, chicken consommé powder and beef extract provide the savory body, while tomato powder and a touch of sauce powder add roundness and depth.
The soy sauce (shoyu) element is quiet — it works the way soy often does in Japanese seasoning, not asserting itself as a flavor but holding the others together.
Sesame-derived flavoring traces through the finish, faint but present.
What comes through most, though, is how cohesive the whole thing is. A consommé chip that tastes built rather than assembled, on a chip light enough to let every layer register.
