Soda is the standard-bearer of the Pachi Pachi Panic lineup — the flavor that defines what this long-running dagashi classic is.

“Pachi pachi” is Japanese onomatopoeia for crackling and popping, and the candy delivers exactly that: pale blue crystals with carbonated gas sealed inside under pressure, released in sharp audible snaps as each piece dissolves on the tongue.

The intensity is worth stating plainly, because it surprises people who expect a children’s novelty.

Reviewers describe vigorous, continuous crackling that can be heard even with the mouth closed, punctuated now and then by a single oversized crystal that goes off with a genuine bang.

For a bag that costs pocket change at a Japanese dagashi shop, the effect is remarkably theatrical.

Soda here means the ramune-style flavor — the light, sweet-tart taste of Japan’s iconic marble-stoppered soft drink, and arguably the country’s most beloved “flavor of summer.”

Where the Melon Soda version channels the retro green cream soda of Japanese coffee shops, this original Soda version is the purest expression of the concept — fizz as flavor, fizz as texture, fizz as sound.
