Glico Bisco Cream Sandwich Biscuit

The red box has not changed much in nearly a century.

The child on the front — rosy-cheeked, cheerful, holding a biscuit — has been updated over the decades, but the essential message has remained the same since 1933: this is a biscuit that is good for you, and also genuinely good.

Bisco was developed by Glico founder Ri-ichi Ezaki as the company’s second nutritious confectionery — a cream sandwich biscuit originally made with yeast to support digestive health.

The yeast has since been replaced by something more modern and more effective, but the founding philosophy has never changed.

Today, each serving of five biscuits delivers over 100 million lactic acid bacteria — spore-type bacteria specifically selected to survive stomach acid and reach the intestines alive. For a snack that fits in a lunchbox, that is a meaningful commitment.

The biscuit itself is what ninety years of refinement looks like.

Wheat flour and wheat germ form the base, baked in layered sheets pressed through rollers rather than simply cut and baked — a technique that produces the characteristic light, crisp snap that distinguishes Bisco from softer sandwich cookies.

The cream inside is mild and gently sweet, built on whole milk powder and inulin, with the understated flavor of good dairy rather than the aggressive sweetness of a children’s snack trying too hard.

Calcium, vitamins B1, B2, and D are present in amounts meaningful enough that a single serving provides roughly one-third of an adult woman’s daily calcium requirement.

The nutritional credentials are real, which is part of why Bisco has remained a fixture of Japanese family life across generations — not as a health food, but as a snack that earns its place at the table honestly.

Three packets of five biscuits per box. Fifteen biscuits in total. It is, as it has always been, exactly the right amount to disappear faster than planned.
