Milk is a flavor category in Japan in a way it is not elsewhere.
Not milk as an ingredient, but milk as the thing you are tasting — condensed-milk candies, Hokkaido dairy branding, whole shelves of sweets whose entire proposition is dairy sweetness with nothing else in the way.
Furuta Tokuno Milk Cookie belongs to that tradition.
Tokuno means extra rich, and the box makes its case in Japanese exclamation marks: Hokkaido fresh cream, 1.6 times more of it than before.
What arrives is a plain round cookie, 4.4 cm across and 8 mm thick, no decoration, ten to a tray.
The texture is dry and crumbly rather than buttery — Furuta builds these on margarine, and they break with a fine, sandy snap that leaves a faint powderiness on the tongue.
The milk comes through afterwards, in the finish, closer to condensed milk or a milk bread roll than to cream.
Japanese reviewers are affectionately sceptical about the tokuno claim: rich is a stretch, they say, but the milk flavor is real and the cookie is very hard to stop eating.
Set your expectations at gentle and pleasant rather than intense and it delivers exactly.
Furuta Confectionery is an Osaka company, best known internationally for Bikkuriman chocolate, and the Tokuno Milk Cookie is its everyday product — the kind of thing that turns up in supermarkets and 100-yen shops rather than gift shops.
That is the appeal. It is simple, cheap, unpretentious, and it goes with coffee, black tea or a glass of cold milk without asking anything of you.
