Ramune candy is Japan’s version of the fizzing tablet — a compressed glucose candy that dissolves rapidly on the tongue, releasing a burst of carbonation from the sodium bicarbonate and acid reaction built into the dough.
Morinaga has been making their version since 1943, and the Daitsubi — “large grain” — format is the one that takes that familiar formula and scales everything up: bigger pieces, more fizz, more of the rushing carbonation sensation that makes the format immediately refreshing.
The Strong Fizzy Soda version pushes the fizzing quality further than the standard Daitsubi Ramune.
The carbonation sensation is described by Morinaga as “kyoretsu na shuwashuwa” — intense fizzing — calibrated for moments that call for a sharp sensory reset rather than a gentle refreshment.
The flavor is a clean, bright soda taste: not a specific fruit, but the generic effervescence of a sparkling drink, cool and immediate, with the sourness of the acid component arriving alongside the fizziness rather than after it.
The tapioca starch in the formulation gives each piece a slightly different texture from a standard compressed glucose tablet — softer at the surface, dissolving more quickly once the tongue’s moisture reaches it, which is part of why the fizzing sensation arrives faster than with harder ramune tablets. At 25g per bag, it disappears quickly regardless.
A 2026 release that builds on the lineage of one of Japan’s most enduring candy formats, pushed a little further in the direction of sensory intensity.
