Morinaga’s Ramune is one of the country’s most quietly ubiquitous sweets, sold in a clear plastic case molded to look like a ramune drink bottle right down to the cap.

The tablets inside are built almost entirely on glucose rather than cane sugar, which gives them a distinctive cold, quick-melting fizz — a prickly effervescence on the tongue meant to echo the carbonation of the bottled drink.

It is also why the product has developed a second life among Japanese students, office workers and gamers, who keep a bottle on the desk and eat them for the fast sugar rather than the flavor.

The Blue Hawaii version keeps that structure and swaps in a bright, cooling tropical note over the base fizz.

The blue comes from gardenia, a plant-derived colorant rather than a synthetic dye, so the shade is a slightly softer sky blue than the syrup it references.
