Tohato Caramel Corn Puff Snacks Anno-Imo Sweet Potato

Tohato Caramel Corn arrives every autumn in a different costume, and this is the sweet potato one.

The bag turns deep purple, the familiar blue eyes look out from a field of roasted imo, and inside is a version of Caramel Corn built around anno-imo — the honey-sweet variety grown on Tanegashima that Japanese shoppers pay a premium for and that turns almost custardy when roasted.

The flavour reads as baked dessert rather than candy.

Tohato uses anno-imo powder as the base, then adds fresh cream and kokuto, the unrefined Okinawan brown sugar, which gives the coating a dark, molasses-backed depth instead of the bright toffee note of the original.

The corn puff underneath carries it well. What you get is closer to a spoonful of sweet potato mont-style dessert than to a caramel snack, and it is noticeably less sugary than the purple packaging suggests.

Autumn in Japan runs on sweet potato the way autumn elsewhere runs on pumpkin — roasted imo vendors appear when the weather turns, and every confectioner puts out an imo edition.

This is Caramel Corn’s contribution, and among Japanese snack reviewers it is usually the better-received of Tohato’s two autumn releases. Limited period only.
