Tohato Caramel Corn Puff Snacks Waguri Japanese Chestnut

This is the other half of Tohato’s autumn pair:

Caramel Corn in a chestnut-gold bag, built around waguri, the Japanese chestnut.

Waguri is native to Japan and has been eaten here since the Jomon period.

It is larger and starchier than the European chestnut, with a restrained sweetness, and it is difficult enough to peel by hand that the word on a package functions as a mark of quality rather than a simple ingredient listing.

Tohato is aiming squarely at Mont Blanc here — the chestnut cream cake Japan adopted from France in the 1930s and made its own, now the flagship dessert of the autumn season.

Sweetened waguri paste supplies the chestnut body, condensed milk brings the dairy roundness of the cream layer, and a measure of cocoa powder adds the darker edge that keeps a Mont Blanc from turning cloying.

Tohato describes the result as delicate, and delicate is the operative word: this is the subtler, more confectionery-like end of the Caramel Corn range.

Same bag, same wide blue eyes, now in chestnut gold.

Good with black coffee or roasted green tea. Released for a limited period each autumn alongside the sweet potato edition.
