Meiji Takenoko no Sato Chocolate Biscuits Kurikinton Family Pack

Kurikinton is New Year food.

It appears in the osechi boxes Japanese families eat on the first days of January — candied chestnuts folded into a glossy golden sweet potato paste, its colour meant to evoke gold and, with it, a prosperous year ahead.

The name translates roughly as chestnut gold mash.

It is one of the few things in the osechi box that children reliably finish.

Meiji has rebuilt that flavour as a Takenoko no Sato.

The chocolate is made with both waguri Japanese chestnut powder and sweet potato powder, reproducing the two halves of the real thing rather than reading as chestnut alone, and the sweetness is deliberately soft and rounded.

Underneath, Meiji swaps the usual biscuit for a cocoa cookie that melts quickly, which gives the whole piece a darker base than the chestnut chocolate would have on its own.

This is the family pack: eight small sealed bags of 11 g inside the outer bag, 62 kcal each, portioned for sharing rather than sitting down with.

A seasonal edition built for autumn, when chestnut season arrives in Japan and every confectioner reaches for it.
