Bourbon Alfort Chocolate Biscuits Anno-Imo Sweet Potato Family Pack

Every Alfort is a ship.

Bourbon moulds a sailing vessel into the chocolate half of each biscuit, and it has been doing so since 1994 — the tall ship on the packaging is the reason Alfort is recognisable on a shelf from across the room.

This is the sweet potato edition, and the chocolate is made with anno-imo powder.

Anno-imo is the sweet potato Japanese shoppers pay a premium for: dense, deep orange, so sweet when roasted that it is called the honey potato.

Bourbon sources its powder from the Goto Islands off Nagasaki, where the crop grows in mineral-rich red clay soil that the company credits for a refined, concentrated sweetness.

What that produces here is a chocolate that reads as baked sweet potato — mellow, milky, more like a dessert than a confection.

The other half is Alfort’s signature digestive biscuit, baked with wholemeal flour for a toasted, slightly savoury snap that keeps the sweetness in check.

Bourbon calls this combination a chocolate biscuit rather than a chocolate-covered one, and the balance is the point: biscuit and chocolate in roughly equal measure, each wrapped individually.
