Furuta Nama Cream Chocolate Tenku no Matcha

The matcha in this one has a name.

Tenku no matcha means matcha of the heavens, and it refers to a specific Shizuoka tea grown in the mountainous interior of the prefecture — high-altitude cultivation, where cooler nights and mist slow the leaf down and concentrate what is in it.

Shizuoka produces more green tea than anywhere else in Japan and has done for over a century, but its mountain plantations are a separate category from the plains, and Furuta has built this limited edition around one of them.

The format is Furuta’s Nama Cream Chocolate, the company’s long-running everyday line: a fresh-cream filling enclosed in milk chocolate, made so the whole piece gives way the moment it is in your mouth rather than needing to be chewed through.

Here the filling is a matcha cream, packed densely enough that a cut piece shows solid green inside.

What comes through first is the melt, and the matcha arrives just behind it — aromatic, with a clean bitterness rather than the hard astringency of a ceremonial-grade sweet.

Furuta keeps the sugar low, so the tea has room to work.

Japanese reviewers who wanted something punishing have called it gentle; those who wanted a matcha chocolate they could eat several of in a row have called it exactly right.

Each piece is individually wrapped, and they are larger than most Japanese bite chocolates, which makes one genuinely satisfying.

Furuta’s Nama Cream line runs a standard version alongside hazelnut and strawberry, with seasonal flavours — sakura, melon, shine muscat — rotating through; Tenku no Matcha joined that rotation in January 2026 as a limited edition.

Worth knowing that the texture changes with temperature: soft at room temperature, and firmer with a sharper melt straight from the fridge.
