Fujiya Home Sakutto Pie Mini Pack Grilled Potato

Yaki-jaga means grilled potato, and in Japan that points at something specific: jagabata, a whole potato baked until the skin blisters, split open and loaded with butter.

It is Hokkaido food, sold at summer festivals and roadside stands, and the appeal is entirely the combination of earthy potato starch and melting dairy.

Fujiya has built this seasoning to chase it — a toasted, skin-on potato savouriness with salt behind it.

The pastry underneath is Home Pie, the layered butter puff biscuit Fujiya has made for decades, and the pairing does something neat: the butter that jagabata needs is already in the dough.

So the potato powder lands on a base that is doing half the work for it, and what arrives tastes less like a potato crisp than like a baked potato eaten with something rich.

At 0.917 g of salt a bag, it is the saltier of the two Home Sakutto flavours and the more straightforwardly savoury.

Sakutto is the sound the pastry makes — a light, clean break rather than a dense snap.

Fujiya calls these otsumami pie, pies to drink with, and the 42 g bag is one person’s portion, meant to be opened and finished rather than rationed.

The grilled corn version is the sweeter, more festival-flavoured counterpart; there is also a six-pack combining both.
