Ginbis Usuyaki Tabekko Dobutsu Animal Shaped Biscuits Butter

Usuyaki Tabekko Dobutsu is the thinnest biscuit Ginbis has ever made under the name, and the thinness is the entire reason it exists.

Usuyaki means thinly baked, and rolling the dough down to its limit changes what happens when you eat one: the butter aroma releases all at once on contact rather than building, and the finish stays light enough that you reach for the next without noticing.

Ginbis calls this atobiku oishisa, a taste that pulls you back.

Tabekko Dobutsu has been a fixture of Japanese childhood since 1978 — an animal-shaped biscuit with that animal’s English name printed across it in capital letters, which is how several generations here learned their first English vocabulary.

The animals are unchanged in this version; what has changed is the build.

Where the original is a sturdy little biscuit with some substance to it, this one shatters.

Butter and margarine supply the richness, sesame runs underneath as a toasted note, and Ginbis keeps the calcium and DHA-bearing fish oil that the Tabekko Dobutsu line has always carried.

At 50 g a bag and 267 kcal, with 95 mg of calcium, this is the standard supermarket size.

Ginbis has grown Tabekko Dobutsu well past the biscuit tin in recent years — character goods, picture books, a 3DCG feature film — but the product itself has stayed recognisably what it was, and the thin-baked edition is a reformulation of the texture rather than of the idea.
