Shiruko Sand Sweet Potato is specific about its source: half the sweet potato in it is anno-imo from Kagoshima.
Anno-imo is the variety Japanese shoppers pay a premium for — dense, deep orange, so sweet when roasted that it is called the honey potato — and Kagoshima is where it belongs, the southern prefecture that includes Tanegashima, the island the variety was developed on.
Matsunaga Seika states the 50% figure on the pack, which is an unusually precise claim for a supermarket biscuit.
The filling is built differently from the rest of the range.
Where most Shiruko Sand variants put azuki paste in the middle, this one uses shiro-an — the smooth white bean paste that Japanese confectioners reach for when they want a neutral base that lets another flavour lead.
Sweet potato powder, anno-imo paste and anno-imo powder all go in on top of it, so the imo flavour is layered rather than singular, and the white bean carries it without the colour or the earthiness that azuki would add.
Sweet potato is autumn in Japan the way pumpkin is autumn elsewhere.
Roasted imo vendors appear when the weather turns and every confectioner releases an imo edition.
Matsunaga Seika has been making Shiruko Sand in Komaki, Aichi, since 1966, and the seasonal flavours rotate with the calendar. 55 g to a bag. A limited-period edition.
