Orion Mini Grape Bottle Ramune Candy

Mini Grape has been in Orion’s lineup since 2008, and the company’s own product page spends most of its space on a joke about it: people keep mistaking it for the blueberry version.

Mā ee kedo, Orion writes in Osaka dialect — well, never mind. That tone is not an accident.

Orion is a dagashi maker, and dagashi has always been as much about the gag as the sweet.

Grape is Japan’s default candy flavour, the one every confectioner has a version of, and the reference point here is Kyoho — the large, dark table grape bred in Japan in the 1930s that the national palate is calibrated to.

It tastes less like fresh grape than like the grape of childhood: deep, sweet, unmistakably purple.

In a ramune tablet, which is built on glucose rather than cane sugar and dissolves with a cold, prickling quickness, that flavour arrives fast and clears fast.

The bottle is the reason these have lasted.

It is a scaled-down ramune drink bottle with a working screw cap, small enough to sit in a child’s palm, and it costs pocket change — the two qualities that define dagashi.

Orion works out of Osaka and has built its entire catalogue on this kind of thing. Sold as a single bottle.
