Tirol Choco Biscuit Milk Chocolate

Tirol Choco Bis has been in production since 1984, and it is the one most Japanese people picture when the brand is mentioned.

The construction is simple — a crushed biscuit folded into milk chocolate, moulded into the small cube Tirol is known for — and the appeal is that it has never changed.

It routinely tops reader polls of the range for exactly that reason.

The cube is what makes Tirol Choco what it is.

Each piece is about an inch square, individually wrapped in brightly printed foil, and sold singly for a few tens of yen.

That format has made it a dagashi shop fixture, a counter item at convenience stores, and a currency of sorts among Japanese schoolchildren — small enough to give away, cheap enough to buy on impulse, and collectible because the company releases dozens of flavours a year and retires most of them.

The Bis wrapper comes in pink, blue and orange, which is itself part of the recognition.

At 50 kcal a piece, chocolate and biscuit is a combination that needs no argument, and Tirol has spent forty years not making one.
