Tirol Choco Sweet Potato Chocolate

Tirol’s pitch for this one is honki imo — serious about sweet potato — and the construction backs it up.

Inside the cube is a sweet potato filling with black sesame kneaded through it, and the base of each piece carries a deliberate scorch mark, reproducing the browned underside of a baked suiito poteto.

That dessert is the reference: the small oval of mashed sweet potato enriched with butter and cream, brushed with egg yolk and baked until the top catches, which Japanese patisseries fill their cases with from September.

Black sesame is the detail that makes it read as the real thing rather than a sweet potato flavour.

Japanese confectioners pair the two constantly — sesame is scattered over sweet potato desserts the way cinnamon goes on apple elsewhere — and its toasted bitterness cuts the filling’s sweetness.

The texture is shittori nameraka, moist and smooth, which is unusual in a Tirol cube and is most of what the development was aimed at.

Tirol Choco sells in cubes about an inch square, individually wrapped in printed foil, and releases dozens of flavours a year — most of them seasonal and most of them retired.

Sweet potato arrived in August 2026 for the autumn, in a bag of five pieces with two different wrapper designs distributed at random.
