Oyatsu Company Baby Star Ramen Snacks Umashio Mini Pack

Baby Star Ramen Umashio takes its cue from shio ramen, the clear pale broth that is one of the three foundational ramen styles in Japan alongside soy sauce and miso.

Shio is the most delicate of the three — built on salt and stock rather than a dominant seasoning — which means the depth has to come from somewhere less obvious.

Oyatsu Company does it with vegetables: the seasoning is built on vegetable umami, with sesame underneath adding a toasted note, and the company’s framing is fūmi yutaka, rich in flavour.

That makes this the subtler of the two standard Baby Star flavours.

Where the chicken version leads with roasted poultry arriving all at once, this one is cleaner and more gradual, the savouriness building as you work through the bag.

The noodles are the same fine, thin strands the brand has used since 1959, fried and pre-seasoned to be eaten dry straight from the bag, breaking with a light pari-pori crackle.

This is the mini size at 20 g, with added calcium, and the pack carries the Red Cup Campaign mark — a portion of sales goes through the Japan Association for the World Food Programme to fund school meals for children in food-insecure regions.
