Oyatsu Company Baby Star Yakisoba Snacks Sauce Mini Pack

Baby Star Yakisoba is modelled on festival food.

Yatai yakisoba — noodles fried on a hot plate at a summer festival stall, slicked with thick brown sauce and finished with dried bonito flakes and aosa seaweed — is one of the defining smells of a Japanese summer evening, and that is what Oyatsu Company has compressed into a dry noodle snack.

Katsuobushi and aosa both go into the seasoning, not just the sauce.

Sōsu in this context means Japanese Worcestershire-style sauce, which is its own thing: thicker, sweeter and more fruit-forward than the British original, built on vegetables and fruit alongside the vinegar and spices.

It is what goes on okonomiyaki, on tonkatsu and on yakisoba, and it is the single most recognisable savoury flavour in Japanese street food.

Against a fried noodle it caramelises slightly, which is where the kōbashii toasted quality comes from.

The noodles are the same thin strands as the rest of the Baby Star range, fried and pre-seasoned to be eaten dry from the bag.

This is the mini size at 20 g with added calcium, and the pack carries the Red Cup Campaign mark — a portion of sales funds school meals through the Japan Association for the World Food Programme.
