Tohato Osatsu Poteco Potato Ring Snacks Sweet Potato

Osatsu Poteco is the sweet one, and the flavour it chases is specific: yaki-imo, the roasted sweet potato sold from carts and stone-roasting ovens across Japan when the weather turns cold.

The vendor’s call is a winter sound here, and the appeal of the thing itself is the contrast between a caramelised, faintly scorched skin and the dense sweet flesh underneath.

Tohato’s description picks up on that — kōbashisa to amajoppai, toasted and sweet-salty.

Sweet potato powder carries the flavour, with anno-imo at 3% of the total.

Anno-imo is the variety grown on Tanegashima that Japanese shoppers pay a premium for, dense and deep orange and sweet enough when roasted to be called the honey potato, and Tohato states the figure on the pack rather than leaving it vague.

Salt runs underneath to keep the sweetness from flattening, which is the amajoppai part.

The rings are the same construction as the rest of the Poteco range: dried potato rather than sliced, hollow and thick-walled, breaking with a hard dry karitto crunch.

They also fit on a fingertip, which is how Japanese children have eaten Poteco for decades.

Tohato adds inulin as dietary fibre, at 2.8 g a bag. 52 g to a bag.
