Earl Grey is tea flavoured with bergamot oil, and bergamot is the detail worth knowing.
It is a citrus grown almost exclusively in Calabria, southern Italy — too sour to eat, cultivated entirely for the oil in its peel, which carries a sharp floral perfume unlike any other citrus.
That oil is what makes Earl Grey Earl Grey, and it is also why the flavour works against milk chocolate: the bergamot cuts the dairy rather than sitting on top of it.
Lotte builds this one in layers.
A tea sauce goes inside the chocolate, with a separate tea extract powder worked into the chocolate itself, so the flavour arrives twice — once as the shell melts and again from the centre.
The packaging specifies Darjeeling, one of the world’s three great teas, grown in the Himalayan foothills of West Bengal and prized for a muscatel character that is as close as black tea comes to being floral on its own.
Premium Ghana is the upper tier of Lotte’s Ghana range, which has been on Japanese shelves since 1964 and takes its name from the origin of its cacao.
Each piece is 8.2 g and 43 kcal. A seasonal edition, sold in a 65 g box.
