Jaga-bata is Hokkaido on a plate.
A whole potato is boiled or steamed until it falls open, a slab of butter is dropped into the split, and it melts into the flesh — that is the entire dish, and it is a fixture of Hokkaido festivals, roadside stalls and home kitchens across the island.
It works because Hokkaido produces both halves: the potatoes and the dairy.
A-La-Potato uses both.
The potatoes are 100% Hokkaido, harvested that same autumn — shin-jaga, new potatoes, with the higher moisture and cleaner, sweeter flavour that stored potatoes lose — and the butter in the butter powder is 100% Hokkaido-produced.
Butter oil and cheese go in alongside, with powdered soy sauce underneath for the savoury edge that a Japanese jaga-bata usually gets from a splash of soy at the table.
The slices are cut thick, which a new potato can carry.
Calbee releases A-La-Potato once a year and only in autumn, since the product cannot exist outside the harvest window; Japanese shoppers watch for it the way they watch for other seasonal arrivals. 60 g to a bag.
