Coris Awa Cola Bubble Ramune Candy

Of the three Awa flavours, cola is the one where the gimmick and the taste point in the same direction.

The candy foams the moment it meets your tongue — awa means bubbles — and cola is a drink defined by its carbonation, so the reaction is not a novelty layered over the flavour but a reasonable approximation of what the drink does.

Coris describes the taste as supaishī, spicy, which is the right word: cola has always been a construction of citrus and warm spices under the caramel, and in a candy with no liquid to dilute them those notes come forward.

The foam is the mechanism every ramune tablet uses, pushed much further.

An acid and a carbonate are pressed into the glucose, and saliva sets them reacting; most ramune manages a faint prickle, while Awa produces enough to fill the mouth.

The character on the pack is shown disappearing into his own.

Three pieces to a pack, 24 kcal in total, meant to be tipped straight in rather than eaten one at a time.

Coris has made dagashi in Osaka since 1948 and is the company behind Fue Ramune, the whistle candy.
