Coris Awa Grape Bubble Ramune Candy

Awa Grape is the purple one, and the colour is doing more work than usual.

The candy foams on contact with the tongue — awa means bubbles, and these arrive in volume rather than as a faint prickle — so what fills the mouth is not just fizz but a deep violet froth.

The character on the packaging is shown engulfed by his own mouthful, which is less exaggeration than illustration.

Grape is Japan’s default candy flavour, and the reference point is Kyoho, the large dark table grape bred here in the 1930s that the national palate is calibrated to.

Coris calls this one jūshī, juicy, and in a foaming candy that reads differently from a hard tablet: the flavour is released by the reaction rather than by dissolving, so it arrives all at once and fades as the bubbles subside.

Three pieces to a pack, 24 kcal in total, meant to be tipped straight into the mouth rather than eaten one at a time — the instruction printed on the front is literally sono mama okuchi ni poi, just pop it in.

Coris has been making dagashi in Osaka since 1948 and is the company behind Fue Ramune, the whistle candy.
