While the soda flavor has been the original and most widely distributed variety since the format’s earliest days, cola was introduced in 2012 and became immediately popular enough to make the cola-flavored whistle tablet a fixture of the Fue Ramune family.

What distinguishes the cola version from the soda is both flavor and character: the soda is clean and refreshing; the cola is deeper, more assertive, and slightly spiced in the way that cola flavor always is.

The tablets are the same construction as the soda version — compressed glucose, shaped to function as a whistle — but the flavoring is a cola seasoning that produces the characteristic warm, slightly caramelized sweetness with an acidic edge rather than the brighter, more citrus-forward quality of soda.

Reviewers consistently describe the cola as “shuwashiwa nai” — there’s no actual carbonation sensation — but the flavor reads as cola immediately and stays recognizable through the piece.
