Fujiya Home Sakutto Pie Mini Pack Grilled Corn

Home Pie is one of Fujiya’s oldest products — a buttery puff pastry biscuit, layered and shatteringly crisp, on Japanese supermarket shelves for decades and firmly on the sweet side of the aisle.

Home Sakutto takes that pastry and turns it savoury.

The company calls it an otsumami pie, a pie to drink with, and the seasoning is dusted on rather than baked in: grilled corn powder over the same laminated layers.

Yaki-morokoshi — grilled corn — is festival food in Japan.

Every summer, yatai stalls turn ears of corn over charcoal and brush them with a soy-based tare that caramelises on contact, and the smell of that is the smell of an August evening here.

The seasoning chases it: sweet corn first, then a toasted, savoury-soy edge, with enough salt to push the whole thing away from dessert.

Against butter pastry it works better than it has any right to, because the corn’s own sweetness has something rich to sit on.

The sakutto in the name is the sound the pastry makes — a light, clean break rather than a dense snap.

At 42 g the bag is one person’s portion, and unlike the full-size Home Pie boxes it is meant to be opened and finished rather than rationed.

Fujiya also makes a grilled potato version, and a six-pack combining both.

Beer is the obvious pairing, which is the point of the whole exercise.
