Fujiya Look Matcha Sweets Assortment Family Pack

Look is a comparison chocolate.

Fujiya has been building the brand around assortments since 1962 — the original four-flavour box put strawberry, coffee, pineapple and almond in a single package so you could work through them and decide which you liked — and the format has outlasted most of its contemporaries.

This edition applies that logic to matcha, putting two different matcha desserts side by side in one bag.

The first is matcha parfait.

Fujiya encloses a milk whip with matcha sauce running through it in chocolate, chasing the layered build of a Japanese parfait — the tall glass dessert that cafés here construct from cream, sauce and ice cream and that has become its own institution.

The second is matcha tart: a matcha-flavoured base with cookie crunch mixed through it, so there is a genuine texture break inside the chocolate, standing in for the pastry shell of a tart.

One is smooth and creamy, the other has bite. Eating them alternately is the entire proposition, and it is a more interesting way into matcha than a single flavour allows.

Fujiya is one of Japan’s oldest confectioners, founded in Yokohama in 1910, and Look sits at the everyday end of its range — supermarket shelf rather than gift counter.

This is the family pack, 22 pieces in a large bag rather than the standard small box, which makes it the format for the cupboard or for putting out when people come over.

Each piece is a single bite. Good with unsweetened green tea, which sharpens the matcha in both halves.
