Ginbis Shimi Choco Corn Stick

Shimi Choco Corn Stick takes the star-shaped chocolate puffs Ginbis is known for and presses them into a bar.

The pieces are bound together into a single stick about the length of a finger, individually wrapped, so what is normally a snack you pour into your hand becomes something you can hold and eat from one end.

Ginbis designed it specifically so that it can be eaten without touching the snack at all — tear the wrapper back, bite, tear a little further.

The chocolate still runs all the way through, which is what defines Shimi Choco Corn.

Rather than coating the outside, Ginbis lets it soak into the puff itself, and in stick form that makes a real difference: there is no shell to crack and shed, so the bar breaks cleanly and the crumbs stay in the wrapper.

Underneath the cocoa, the base is corn grits with whole wheat flour worked through it, which gives a toasted, slightly nutty depth, and the texture is the same light sakusaku crunch as the loose version — crisp on the bite, then dissolving.

Each stick carries 22 mg of calcium.

At 16 g and 92 kcal, a single Shimi Choco Corn Stick is portioned for one moment rather than one sitting: a lunchbox, a desk drawer, the bottom of a bag.

Like the rest of the Ginbis Shimi Choco Corn range, it is sold and stored at room temperature year-round in Japan, which is unusual for anything chocolate and makes the stick an easy thing to carry through a summer.

There is also a white chocolate version.
