Glico Cratz Snack Edamame

If a snack brand exists solely to accompany beer, sooner or later it must pay tribute to the original.

Edamame — young soybeans boiled in the pod and showered with salt — is the canonical Japanese beer companion, the dish that lands on the izakaya table before you have finished ordering.

This flavor is Cratz’s homage: a beer snack modeled on the beer snack.

The green comes honestly.

Edamame powder is worked into the seasoning, its color from gardenia — a plant-derived pigment — rather than synthetic dye, and the flavor lands the way the fresh bean does: gently sweet, vegetal, and rounded, closer to comfort than to punch.

Where the Pepper Bacon sibling shouts, Edamame hums.

What keeps the mildness from fading against a cold drink is a quietly Japanese piece of engineering: kombu extract folded beneath the bean.

Kelp and soybean share the same glutamate backbone — the pairing is essentially edamame seasoned with dashi logic — so the flavor carries more depth than its soft profile suggests.

Chicken and vegetable extracts fill in the lower register, and dried beer yeast appears in the dough here as it does across the line, the brand’s small signature.

The format is unchanged and remains the point: a fermented dough soaked in seasoned oil, then baked slowly and hard until the outside snaps — kari-kari — over a light, airy interior, with whole roasted almonds scattered through the bag for contrast.

Glico’s own survey verdict, that nine in ten beer drinkers found the line “makes the beer go down,” applies here in its most understated form.

Pepper Bacon is the Cratz for the first, thirsty glass. Edamame is the one for the slow second — the flavor of the izakaya table, rendered shelf-stable.
