The other Cratz flavors were tested on beer drinkers. This one was designed by beer makers.
Grilled Corn — yakimorokoshi — is a limited-time collaboration developed under the supervision of the brewers of Kirin Ichiban Shibori, one of Japan’s flagship lagers.
Rather than guessing what suits a crisp pale beer, Glico put the question to the people who brew it, and the answer they built together is this bag: sweet, toasty, and tuned to the exact register of the drink it was made to sit beside.
Yakimorokoshi itself is one of the great smells of Japan.
It is the festival-stall and Hokkaido-roadside classic — a whole ear of corn grilled over flame and brushed with soy sauce, the sugars and the shoyu caramelizing together into a sweet-savory char that carries for meters.
Sapporo’s summer corn carts made the dish a regional icon, and this flavor honors the geography: the corn here is Hokkaido-grown sweet corn, milled into the seasoning.
The soy sauce is the detail that makes it “grilled” rather than merely “corn.”
Powdered shoyu runs through the seasoning alongside the corn’s sweetness, recreating the burnished, umami-edged flavor of the brushed-and-charred surface rather than the plain steamed kernel.
The effect is a snack that tastes distinctly of the festival version of corn — Japan’s version — not of a corn chip.
The chassis is the same one the whole line rides on: fermented dough baked hard and slow, crackling outside and airy within, with roasted almonds mixed through and the house signature of dried beer yeast in the dough.
Sweet corn, soy char, a bitter-clean lager — the brewers knew what they were doing.
