Glico Cream Collon Wafer Rolls Otona no Milk

A Collon is a wafer rolled into a short tube and filled with cream, and the shape is the product — korokoro is the Japanese word for something small and rolling, which is where the name comes from.

Glico has made Collon since 1972, and they are among the few Japanese snacks whose appeal is as much tactile as anything: bite-sized cylinders you can line up, stack, or put on a fingertip.

Otona no means for grown-ups, and this is the Collon that earns it.

Where the standard version is a plain milk cream in a plain wafer, here both halves are darkened.

The cream is built on roast milk paste — milk cooked until the sugars caramelise and the flavour deepens — and the wafer around it is a caramel one, faintly bitter rather than neutral.

The cream itself uses European fresh cream, which Glico specifies on the pack.

What that produces is a Collon that reads as a small patisserie item rather than a children’s snack: toasted dairy against a bitter edge, with the sweetness pulled back.

Glico positions it for tea time. A measure of Western liquor runs underneath, adding the faint aromatic lift Japanese confectioners use in baked goods. 48 g to a box.
