Glico Kobe Roasted Chocolate Rich Cacao

Kobe Roasted Chocolate Rich Cacao reverses the ingredient order of its milk sibling.

Cacao mass sits second, ahead of whole milk powder, with cocoa powder and cocoa butter behind it — so where the milk version leads with dairy, this one leads with cocoa.

The result is bitter and full-bodied, and Glico’s own phrase for the sweetness is sukkiri: clean, uncluttered, gone quickly rather than lingering on the palate.

The beans are roasted by Glico itself at its Kobe factory.

Most manufacturers buy cocoa mass already processed; roasting in-house is unusual for a mass-market Japanese chocolate and is the thing this range is named for.

It also matters more in a bitter chocolate than a milky one, because there is less dairy to sit between you and whatever the roast produced.

Each piece carries 83 mg of cacao polyphenols, the marker Japanese chocolate makers now print on anything positioned as serious.

Glico has made confectionery since 1922 and calls this one otona no tame no — for grown-ups.

The pieces are ōtsubu, large-grain, at 7.2 g apiece, roughly double a standard Japanese bite chocolate, so each one lasts long enough to work through.

108 g to a box, 41 kcal a piece, with a twelve-month shelf life. Black coffee is the natural partner.
