Kobe Roasted Chocolate is roasted by Glico itself.
Most chocolate manufacturers buy cocoa mass already processed; Glico roasts the beans at its own factory in Kobe, which is unusual for a mass-market Japanese chocolate and is the thing the product is named for.
The cacao comes from the Dominican Republic, specified on the pack — a bean known for a fruity, mellow profile rather than the bitter intensity of West African cocoa.
That sourcing is what lets Glico make its actual claim: a sweetness that does not depend on sugar.
Whole milk powder sits second on the ingredient list, ahead of cacao mass and cocoa butter, and a milk seasoning built on fresh cream and skimmed milk powder goes in on top.
The result is creamy and rounded rather than sharply sweet, with the Dominican cacao’s own fruit character coming through underneath the dairy.
At 7.4 g a piece these are ōtsubu, large-grain chocolates — roughly double the size of a standard Japanese bite chocolate, so each one lasts.
Glico has made confectionery since 1922 and runs the Kobe factory as its chocolate operation.
The range extends to four other versions: a bitter hōjun cacao, a gaufrette-crunch edition made with Kobe Fugetsudo, and two blended with Van Houten cocoa.
This is the milk-forward one, 104 g to a box, 43 kcal a piece, with a twelve-month shelf life.
