“Osatsu” is the affectionate diminutive of satsumaimo — Japanese sweet potato — and the flavor the name describes is specific: not the generic sweetness of a sweetened snack, but the particular gentle warmth of a domestic sweet potato coaxed to its natural best.

The sweet potato character here comes from actual Japanese-grown sweet potato powder worked into the dough alongside black sugar (kokuto) — the unrefined molasses-rich sugar from Okinawa and the Amami Islands that adds a deeper, more mineral sweetness than refined white sugar would produce, with a faint caramel note that rounds the sweet potato’s earthiness.

Sweetened condensed milk and butter add a dairy richness that ties the two together, making the overall flavor profile closer to a baked sweet potato with a touch of cream than to a sweet snack with sweet potato flavoring.

The result is what Glico describes as “yasashii amai” — a gentle sweetness, the kind that doesn’t overwhelm but builds quietly with each stick.
