Goshoku Ika No Sugata Age Fried Squid Snack Hot Chili

The Hot Chili version of Ika No Sugata Age takes Goshoku’s six-decade-old fried squid snack and pushes it firmly into snack-as-drinking-companion territory.

The base is the same: squid processed into a flat, whole-body shape, coated and fried at Goshoku’s Kure factory in Hiroshima until completely crisp all the way through, with the concentrated umami of dried squid built into every bite.

The hot chili seasoning layers on top of that squid base with the kind of heat that builds rather than fades — present from the first bite, growing through the bag, and settled into a satisfying warmth rather than a sharp burn by the end.

The chili works with the squid’s natural salinity rather than against it, which is why this version tends to disappear faster than the plain version despite being noticeably spicier. ]

The heat level is genuine enough to warrant some caution, but calibrated for snacking rather than punishment.

Five pieces to a bag — one more than most of the flavor variants, which makes the per-piece math slightly more forgiving without changing the fundamental problem of the bag being empty before you’ve made a decision about stopping.
