Koikeya Dontacos Tortilla Chips Cheese Chili Taco

Cheese Chili Taco is the other half of Dontacos’ 2025 rebirth — the partner flavor launched alongside Beef Chili Taco when Koikeya rebuilt its thirty-year-old tortilla chip from the dough up.

Where the Beef version leads with meat, this one inverts the recipe: rich, concentrated cheese is the foundation, with meat umami layered underneath it and spice riding on top as the accent.

Koikeya’s own description calls it a “yamitsuki” cheese — the addictive kind — and the architecture explains why.

The cheese provides the fatty, savory body; the meat depth keeps it from reading as merely dairy; and the chili-spice edge resets the palate so the next chip always seems like a good idea.

The chip beneath is the renewal’s real achievement, shared across the lineup.

Each triangle is cut larger and thicker than the pre-2025 Dontacos — “Grande,” as the package says — and Koikeya reworked both the corn varieties and their blend ratio, producing a chip that opens with a dense zaku’ crunch and then, unusually for something this sturdy, dissolves cleanly rather than lingering.

The bag delivers its first impression before the first bite: the aroma when the seal breaks is deliberate brand engineering, listed by Koikeya as one of the product’s three pillars.

Dontacos has been Japan’s homegrown tortilla chip since 1994, complete with a jingle the country can sing from memory, and cheese-plus-chili is arguably the most internationally legible flavor the renewed brand makes — a nacho translated into Japanese snack grammar, denser, louder, and tuned for a cold drink.

Between the two flagships: Beef for the carnivorous mood, Cheese for the one that wants richness with a spark.
