Koikeya Karamucho Potato Chips Hot Chili Large Size

A hundred and five grams of Karamucho is a bag for a table rather than a person.

Spicy snacks have a natural ceiling — most people reach a point where the chilli has made its argument — but Karamucho has been working around that since 1984 by building the seasoning on savoury depth rather than heat alone.

Chicken bouillon and a vegetable extract powder carry it, a flavoured oil binds it, and the chilli sits on top.

That construction is why a large bag works at all.

Koikeya invented this category in Japan.

Before Karamucho there were essentially no hot-flavoured snacks on the domestic market, and launching one was a genuine commercial risk; forty years later kara plus a mock-Spanish suffix is among the most recognisable brand names in the country, and the three elderly women printed on every bag are as familiar as the product.

The chips are thin and wavy, cut rather than formed, which puts the seasoning on the surface where it lands immediately — a more direct hit than the stick version of the same flavour gives.

The potatoes are 100% Japanese-grown and non-GMO. This is the L size at 105 g, sold for sharing.
