Three seaweeds season these potato chips, which is two more than a nori-shio product normally carries.
Aonori is the fine green laver dusted over takoyaki, sharp and aromatic; aosa is sea lettuce, broader and more oceanic; yaki-nori is the roasted sheet nori wrapped around rice balls, toasted and savoury.
Each occupies a different part of the flavour, and using all three is what the kami — divine — in the name is claiming.
The rest of the list is short. Potato, vegetable oil, a flavoured oil, salt, chilli and yeast extract, and nothing else before the seasoning agent.
Pride Potato is Koikeya’s premium range of potato chips, and the argument is the potato: 100% Japanese-grown and non-GMO, sliced and fried so the potato leads and the seaweed follows.
Nori-shio is one of the two or three foundational flavours of the Japanese potato chip aisle, as basic here as salt-and-vinegar is in Britain.
Koikeya made Japan’s first domestically produced potato chips in 1962.
Available at 55 g, and at 102 g as muchū size.
