Koikeya Pure Potato Chips Super Consomme

Consommé is a fixed potato chip flavour in Japan.

It arrived decades ago and became a default alongside salt and nori, understood here not as the clear French soup but as a savoury, meat-backed seasoning powder — a flavour Japanese children grow up with and Japanese adults never quite outgrow.

Koikeya’s Super Consommé is the maximalist version of it.

The ingredient list explains the chō, meaning super.

Chicken bouillon powder, beef extract powder and vegetable extract powder build the base; tomato seasoning and actual tomato add fruit and acidity; and then there is umeboshi powder, the pickled plum that Japanese cooks use for sharp salt-sourness, which is not something you find in a consommé anywhere else.

Layered together, it produces a seasoning that is savoury, tangy and considerably denser than the standard consommé chip.

Underneath, this is Pure Potato.

Koikeya made Japan’s first mass-market bagged chips in 1962, and this line is where the company makes its case for the potato itself — 100% Japanese-grown, non-GMO, cut thick and fried so the slice breaks with a dry sakutto snap rather than shattering.

The thickness matters here more than in the milder flavours: it gives the potato enough presence to stand under all that seasoning.
