Lotte Premium Ghana Chocolat Whip The Vanilla

Most chocolate in Japan retreats in warm weather. Lotte built this one to go the other way.

Chocolat Whip is aerated — whipped through with air so the piece is light rather than dense — and Lotte positions it explicitly as a spring and summer chocolate, the sort of thing that suits the season when a solid bar starts to feel heavy.

It collapses quickly and cleanly, and the lightness is what the whole product is organised around.

The vanilla is the specific claim.

Lotte uses Bourbon vanilla beans from Madagascar, the variety that supplies most of the world’s premium vanilla and carries a deep, creamy, faintly floral aroma quite unlike synthetic vanillin.

Alongside it goes Hokkaido fresh cream at 2.7% — Hokkaido being Japan’s dairy country, a name that functions here the way Normandy does in France.

Whole milk powder comes second on the ingredient list, ahead of cocoa butter and cacao mass, which tells you the balance: this is a dairy-forward chocolate with vanilla running through it rather than a cocoa-forward one.

Ghana is Lotte’s flagship chocolate brand, on Japanese shelves since 1964 and named for the origin of its cacao.

Premium Ghana is the upper tier of that range, and Lotte’s framing for this box is jibun wo motenasu — hosting yourself, a small daily reward. Each piece is 7.1 g and 42 kcal, individually portioned inside the box. A seasonal edition.
