Lotte Premium Ghana Fruits Chocolat Rich Blood Orange

Blood orange is a Sicilian fruit before it is anything else.

The deep red flesh comes from anthocyanins that only develop where warm days meet cold nights, and the slopes around Mount Etna provide exactly that — which is why Sicily produces most of the world’s blood oranges and why Lotte specifies the island on the pack.

The flavour that results is less simply sweet than an ordinary orange, with a berry-like depth behind the citrus.

Lotte uses it at 20% by raw-fruit equivalent, which is a substantial proportion for a filled chocolate.

A blood orange sauce built on concentrated juice goes inside each piece, with more concentrated juice worked into the chocolate itself, so the fruit arrives from both directions.

The colour comes from gardenia, carotenoid and purple carrot rather than synthetic dye, and a bitterant is added — an unusual inclusion that suggests Lotte wanted the pith-like edge a real blood orange carries.

Premium Ghana is the upper tier of Lotte’s Ghana range, on Japanese shelves since 1964 and named for the origin of its cacao.

Each piece is 8.2 g and 43 kcal. A seasonal edition in a 65 g box.
