Za Shokora — The Chocolat — is Lotte’s second permanent member of the Toppo lineup, and it earns that status by doing something the original does not: it shifts the register entirely.

Where the classic Toppo is milky, sweet, and broadly accessible, The Chocolat leans into the darker end of chocolate, building a filling that carries the gentle, lingering bitterness that Japanese confectionery describes as horo nigai — a bitterness that is present but never harsh, adult in character without being austere.

The formula tells the story. Cacao mass appears higher in the ingredient list, and the recipe adds a cacao processed product alongside the cocoa powder — a deliberate layering of cacao-derived ingredients that deepens the chocolate note and gives it a complexity the standard filling does not reach for.

The cream powder and nut milk powder of the original are absent here; in their place, the filling relies more directly on the cacao itself, with only the essential sweetness of condensed milk and whole milk powder to soften what might otherwise be too sharp.

Yeast extract powder adds a faint savory depth that sits beneath everything and makes the whole filling feel more grounded.

The pretzel shell remains unchanged — the same crisp, hollow tube of domestic Japanese wheat with its light saltiness and clean snap — and the contrast it provides works even more effectively here.

Where the original plays salt against milk chocolate sweetness, The Chocolat plays it against the bitterness of dark cacao, and the result is a stick that feels balanced in a more sophisticated way: each element pushing back against the other, neither winning, both arriving at something better than either could produce alone.
