This is the version without the lottery.
Marukawa splits its range into atari-tsuki — products with a winning mark hidden in the wrapper, redeemable at Japanese shops for another pack — and atari-nashi, which have none.
The eight-piece packs belong to the second group, and what you get instead of the gamble is more gum: eight pieces where the Marble Gum packs hold six.
Orange is the flavour, and Marukawa uses real orange in it — this pack carries an allergen declaration, which most of the company’s gums do not.
What that gives is a rounder, less synthetic citrus than a purely flavoured gum manages, arriving immediately on the bite and fading into a long chew.
It is sweet rather than sharp, pitched at children rather than at adults looking for a sour hit.
Marukawa has made chewing gum in Nagoya since 1954 and supplies most of what sits on a Japanese dagashi shelf — the small, cheap, brightly packaged kind a generation here grew up chewing on the walk home from school.
Eight pieces to a pack.
